Increasing Local Investments in Brazil

In the energy industry, the name Dresser-Rand speaks volumes. As one of the largest global suppliers of custom-engineered rotating equipment solutions, Dresser-Rand products are deployed across energy infrastructure markets worldwide. Dresser-Rand’s client base consists of oil and gas producers and distributors, national oil companies, and chemical and industrial companies in more than 150 countries.

Best known for its ability to bring advanced technologies and premier service, Dresser-Rand continues to broaden its global footprint by investing in  local infrastructure to increase its local presence and serve clients more effectively.

based clients, Dresser-Rand is developing its own pipeline of local specialists to assist with field service, assemble equipment and maintain operations. With no recordable injuries at its Brazilian facilities during the past five years, the company is executing local training in Brazil and incorporating Dresser-Rand’s best practices in quality and safety.

One of Dresser-Rand’s solutions in Brazil includes bringing electricity to almost one million inhabitants in remote Amazon regions. With the acquisition of Guascor in 2011, Dresser-Rand has the expertise and technology to provide power in off-grid rural locations with gas and diesel power generation or photovoltaic (PV) systems. Because bringing electricity to these remote communities in a conventional manner is expensive and could result in large load losses while damaging the ecosystem, Dresser-Rand, in conjunction with other companies, provides utilities throughout the Amazon with reliable and proficient O&M capabilities.

The main advantages of distributed power generation solutions include continuous availability of photovoltaic or gas and diesel power generation, increased energy availability, grid expansion to new housing at reduced cost, and remote system monitoring.

“Giving people the possibility to have access to information and training and to do school work at night is fantastic,” said Dresser-Rand Regional Business Leader Brasil – Angola, Joaquim Pereira.

Dresser-Rand also develops mini-grid systems with a satellite link that ties the power generation system to a central location within a village and connect power lines to each house. This can provide a link to the Internet. “Think about the impact on medical treatments and enabling people to connect to educational sites on the web for the remote schools,” shared Dresser-Rand General Manager - Program Management Operations, Dan T. Simpson. “With Internet access, you have the ability to have a doctor physically look at somebody on the screen, ask questions, and provide treatment.”

Moreover, through the Brazilian federal government's Luz Para Todos (Light for All) program, Guascor do Brasil (now a Dresser-Rand company), installed solar hybrid grid power stations to generate consistent, reliable energy for off-grid communities.

“Dresser-Rand’s local presence enables the company to  be part of the Brazilian community, and bring energy and the environment into harmony for the benefit of society,” stated Dan Simpson.

As one of the largest suppliers of custom-engineered rotating equipment and service support networks in the industry, Dresser-Rand helps maximize plant efficiencies, improve productivity and reduce carbon footprints with its full suite of energy solutions.

“Technology is a key enabler to the value we bring to our clients, so we continuously invest in extending the capabilities of our existing product technology platforms,” continued Mr. López-Videla.

Dresser-Rand also looks to introduce other newly-developed technologies such as distributed  liquefied natural gas technology (LNGo™ system) and its DATUM® integrated compression system (ICS) technology, which has applications across many production platforms.

In order to best support Brazilian-

In Brazil, Dresser-Rand’s presence dates back to the 1950s. Dresser-Rand has a long-established working relationship with Petrobras, dating back to the oil company’s earliest refineries. “We have compressors that we installed in Brazil in the 1950s  that are still running today,” shared Dresser-Rand’s Vice President for Business Development, Latin America, Adolfo López-Videla.

With major investments in infrastructure and people, Brazil is “a very important market for Dresser-Rand,” Mr. López-Videla continued.

Further evidence of the company’s commitment to the Brazilian market is the new facility in Santa Barbara D’Oeste, with full service and packaging capabilities. Increasing the local team, the company brought on more than 125 employees last year to help assemble compression packages for oil and gas production in the Pre-Salt fields off the coast of Brazil. In 2013, the employees at the Santa Barbara D’Oeste facility completed 27 of the compressor trains for the first three floating, production and offloading (FPSO) vessels for these Pre-Salt fields.

Considering that 10% of the company’s workforce is in Brazil, Adolfo López-Videla, assures that, “Local content is human knowledge, technical expertise and service. We strive to bring what matters most—our locally trained experts.”

Dresser-Rand stays ahead of the curve by developing local capabilities and resources required to support its clients’ needs in operations, maintenance, equipment, and field installations. The company pioneered the development of centrifugal compressors capable of compressing carbon dioxide to the very high pressures required for injection in Brazil’s Pre-Salt fields, while maintaining a small, lightweight footprint.
