Aerospace Expertise Ensures Subsea Safety

For over 15 years, Bastion Technologies has brought innovative technologies and fresh applications to its customers. Bastion’s upstream services and products include mechanical, electrical, and structural design and analysis; systems engineering; as well as safety and quality services. The connection between working situations that extend beyond Earth’s atmosphere and working in the ocean depths is readily apparent - very costly structures that are in remote and extreme environments.

Using its expertise in aerospace, Bastion designs, models, and supports systems and structures needed by subsea customers including drilling equipment, semi-submersibles, jack-up rigs, and FPSOs. Bastion provides simulation capabilities and unique capabilities such as its Deep Water Dropped Objects Analysis, an impact analysis of the excursion distribution of objects dropped in deep water. Bastion is the only company to perform this special case analysis modeling multi-rigid bodies (coupled objects).

Bastion ensures the fidelity of its modeling techniques by validating its models by dropping scaled objects in NASA’s 40-foot deep Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory where it supports real-time training of International Space Station astronauts.

Bastion’s latest innovative design involves its INTRSEPTR - a subsea intervention system that safely and autonomously regains control of a well undergoing a catastrophic event. The same technology, rooted in intelligent control systems used in NASA, is now revolutionizing subsea drilling operations.

Bastion Technologies Founder and President Jorge Hernandez described, “The INTRSEPTR is an automated intervention system that will secure the drill string, disengage the fuel source, and shut down a well experiencing a blowout or other catastrophic conditions. The system features a proprietary automated shutdown technology, proprietary intelligent control system, proprietary drill string securing and shearing technology, proprietary Pyro-Accumulator power system, and multiple well recovery options. Our intervention system reduces the risk to environmental and safety impacts related to deepwater and ultra deepwater drilling and preventing the aftermath of a catastrophic event such as the Macondo incident very quickly.”

Now, Bastion envisions licensing the INTRSEPTR concept and the Pyro-Accumulator to companies performing deepwater drilling in order to address associated risks. The company is eager to develop partnerships in Brazil to scale this technology and integrate it into the market.
