Schlumberger: In Brazil since 1945

Schlumberger is the world's leading oilfield services company supplying technology, information solutions, and integrated project management that optimize reservoir performance for customers working in the oil and gas industry. Founded in 1926, the company currently employs more than 115,000 people of over 140 nationalities, operating in approximately 85 countries.

Schlumberger supplies a wide range of products and services from formation evaluation through directional drilling, well cementing and stimulation, well completions and productivity to consulting, software, information management, and IT infrastructure services that support core industry operational processes.

The current market in Brazil is offering Schlumberger a unique set of challenges. Due to its substantial footprint in the country, Schlumberger is tackling these obstacles. In fact, the company has been operating in Brazil since 1945, providing solutions to key industry hurdles.

Employing nearly 3000 people, Schlumberger manages its operations in Brazil from 48 locations between operational bases, and from offices in 13 cities including Macaé, Santos, Salvador, Aracaju, Natal, Mossoró, Vitoria, São Mateus, Manaus, and Urucu. The headquarters of Schlumberger Brazil are located in Rio de Janeiro, the same city housing the headquarters of Schlumberger, Latin America.

In an effort to address pre-salt development challenges, Schlumberger decided to take the lead and create a Geo-engineering R&D center (BRGC) at the Ilha do Fundao in Rio de Janeiro. Inaugurated in 2011, and today with a staff of over 100 scientists and the widest portfolio of ongoing R&D projects (each lasting about two to three years), Schlumberger is focused on production as well as reservoir and drilling performance.

One of the key aspects of the BRGC’s success is the constant pursuit of interaction with local universities. These connections provide a sustainable future for the industry in the country - not only to strengthen the company by recruiting the best talent but also to build technical cooperation with the entities in order to maximize the size and quality of the local content.

Brazil remains the largest offshore market in the world and one of the most attractive in terms of services to the oil and gas industry. There are 65 deep-water rigs here, more than anywhere else in the world. If a company operates in deep-water, it will be well-served in Brazil.

Schlumberger views Brazil as a long-term commitment. The country has a large volume of activities and has the largest number of reserves discovered in the last ten years. With only 4.5 percent of its sedimentary basins under concession, it presents a massive potential for the oil and gas industry.
