The Integrated Edge - Extreme Performance for Extreme Conditions

This year, the Kongsberg Group reaches a remarkable milestone of two centuries in business. Its bicentennial celebration traces the history of a company born in Kongsberg, Norway, to a global group significantly impacting markets worldwide.

Kongsberg Oil and Gas Technologies, the newest division of the Kongsberg Group, leverages this long history, tapping into leading-edge industrial technology and shedding light on the unique challenges of oil and gas production.

Founded in 2010, the company serves the industry by providing advanced engineering, technology, products, and services for drilling and production. It also offers consultancy, data management, and analysis tools, which lead to significant operational and performance gains.

These cutting-edge tools and services emerge from the group’s long-time experience in maritime and defense services, which the company then translates into industry-specific gains for established and emerging markets in oil and gas worldwide.

Kongsberg has made a long-term investment in Brazil, where recent oil discoveries have dovetailed with the company’s 60 years of steady production growth. Members of the Kongsberg Group, particularly the Maritime division, have had a presence in Rio de Janeiro since the 1980s. These roots have resulted in high-profile contracts in shipping and rig provisions and these relationships reflect Kongsberg Oil & Gas “people focused” development.

“We look to grow by five times our current growth rate, and expect to become a billion dollar company in the next four to five years,” said Kongsberg Oil and Gas Technologies President Mark Hall. “Our vision is to become a global player in providing oil and gas technologies, including in Brazil and Latin America.”

It is evident that Kongsberg is committed to becoming part of the community of Brazilian businesses. Beginning with its Brazilian office based in Rio de Janeiro, Kongsberg Oil and Gas Technologies’ goal is to continue to invest in building a strong, local staff and a dedicated team of experts.

Petrobras and Kongsberg Oil and Gas Technologies have recently signed a contract to provide drilling system data as well as production assurance and optimization to monitor the gas field in the Santos Basin. This exciting partnership is only part of a Kongsberg’s long-range vision for local commitments.

“Even before we had existing contracts with Petrobras, we hired and trained local engineers,” said Mr. Hall. “We’ve put them through our entire training program in preparation for future projects with Petrobras and other operators in the Brazilian market.” This advanced training has allowed Kongsberg Oil and Gas Technologies to draw on local Brazilian engineers for expanding projects.

As investment in oil and gas production increases in Brazil, Kongsberg offers global business and technical consulting services in the areas of integrated operations, digital oilfield technology, business transformation, operational readiness, and engineering services to provide deep knowledge for high performance.

Mr. Hall explained, “It’s really about how you can improve the performance of your organization across the entire value chain, both on the commercial side as well as optimizing your assets through exploration and field development to production and operational phases for an integrated edge.”

Internationally, the Kongsberg Group has committed to the highest levels of sustainable development, striking a balance between financial growth and social and environmental responsibility. Kongsberg is a strong proponent of corporate social responsibility and believes that advancements in intelligent technologies lead to more environmentally-friendly, reliable, and safer results. Kongsberg Oil and Gas Technologies is committed to expanding these environmental offerings in Brazil. With increasing safety and environmental standards, it can supply critical solutions to address industry needs.

This integration has resulted in superior environmental monitoring which combines subsea technology with software and space technology. Subsea sensors are deployed to monitor environmental conditions, while subsea communication technology creates data networks on the ocean floor for transmitting environmental data, technology originally developed for the Defense and Protech divisions of the Kongsberg Group.

Space and satellite technologies are also used to monitor oil spills and track environmental conditions through high-resolution satellite imaging. AUVs (autonomous underwater vehicles), equipped with advanced sensors, measure temperature, pressure, ocean currents, hydrocarbon content, and the movement of ice, provide information in real-time or after the completion of autonomous and pre-programmed data collection.

“This technology is unique,” said Mr. Hall. “We can bring in industrial-hardened technology that has uses both in the military and industrial sectors.”

Collaboration with the other member companies in the Kongsberg Group provides knowledge and access to advanced industrial technology, which is then applied to the oil and gas sector. This industry expansion in Brazil requires both cutting-edge innovation as well as proven and reliable systems and Kongsberg Oil and Gas Technologies is well-positioned to deliver “extreme performance in extreme conditions” on behalf of its customers.

The Kongsberg Group will celebrate its 200-year anniversary this fall in Rio de Janeiro on September 19 and in Houston on September 26.
