University of Houston: Leading Innovative Energy Programs

“The University of Houston has aligned its energy programs as a strategic platform to be a viable partner of the energy industry.” - Dr. Ramanan Krishnamoorti, Chief Energy Officer.

The University of Houston (UH) is the leading public research university in "the energy capital of the world" and is proud of its strong ties to Brazil’s upstream, downstream, and alternate energy industry. This Carnegie-designated Tier One research university awards more than 8,000 degrees annually, and has more than 224,000 alumni worldwide.

UH’s Energy Initiative provides a platform for the university to be a strategic partner of the energy industry by producing trained workforce, strategic and technical leadership, research and development, and technology incubation. In addition to STEM programs related to energy; UH’s strengths in global energy management, energy law, sustainability and efficiency, superconductivity, and alternative energy reflect the breadth of the university’s curriculum.

Energy programs at UH include Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Industrial-Organizational Psychology, and Subsea Engineering.

Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is one of the most diverse and comprehensive geosciences programs in the US with numerous degree and continuing educational short-courses designed for industry. The department is active in deep water geophysics and tectonic development in the South Atlantic – specifically the Rio Grande Rise on the Brazilian margin and Walvis Ridge on the African margin.

Industrial and Organizational Psychology is examining safety and security outcomes for the energy industry and is focusing on the impact of both leader and employee situational awareness. Collaborative research with energy industries creates evidence-based solutions with sustainable business impact in the oil and gas industries.

“A considerable strength is that our faculty has experience in the business world, which positions us to apply our state-of-the-art research tools to solve long-standing and emerging business problems.” Prof. Alan Witt, Director of Psychology Management.

Subsea Engineering is the first and only education program of its kind in the US, with a curriculum developed as part of a major industry-academic collaboration. The core subsea courses that focuses on wellhead to FPSO.

The program centers on Analysis Led Design, a model-based approach to the automated design of complex subsea systems that lead to substantial improvement in engineering efficiency.

"Our curriculum, taught by the world leaders in subsea engineering, combines model based methods with the best in-class design practices enabling our graduates to invent the next generation subsea systems.” Prof. Matthew Franchek, Director of Subsea Engineering.

“University of Houston’s Energy Initiative has led to strategic partnerships around the globe that have resulted in comprehensive programs, collaborative research, and joint and dual degrees. There are many opportunities between UH and Brazilian institutions of higher education.” Dr. Jaime Ortiz, Vice Provost for Global Strategies and Studies.
