“We are unique in our field,” explained Bonnie Gordon, Director of Bonnie Gordon College of Confectionary Arts in Toronto, Canada. “There are very few colleges that are focused fully on confectionary arts. Everything we do is at an artisanal level. We see ourselves as trendsetters in the marketplace.”

Bonnie Gordon College offers a wide range of programs ranging from the comprehensive Confectionary Arts Diploma and Designer Cakes Certificate to Bakery, Decorating, and Chocolate Essentials. The college provides an efficient pathway to a new career or simply a new skill to use at home. As over 95% of incoming students already have a college degree or work experience, programs are compressed; full-time certificate programs can be completed in a matter of weeks.

“Our programs are unique, and we have a strong focus on individual learning. We have welcomed many Brazilian students over the years who have returned to successfully open their own businesses," said Ms. Gordon. Such is the case of Renata, a Brazilian student of Bonnie Gordon College who has since returned to Brazil to open her own culinary school.

Bonnie Gordon College has hosted many Brazilian students who chose the school for its robust reputation. Known for its well-balanced professional training that lands students in the workplace in a short amount of time, it is no wonder students come from far and wide to learn from Canada’s best confectioners.

Carleton University, known as “Canada’s Capital University” due to its location in the country’s capital of Ottawa, offers more than 65 programs, with internationally recognized courses in engineering, business, the humanities and public affairs. Journalism, political science and global politics are particular draws for international students, along with intensive ESL programs that provide specific language skills needed for research and study.

At Carleton University, people come together to solve the world’s problems. Carleton researchers and community collaborators team up at 1125@Carleton, a living laboratory that hosts around 90 research groups tackling issues such as homelessness, sanitation, housing and literacy.

A recent project by startup Sentinel Solutions benefited from the contributions of two Brazilian engineering students participating in internships through the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE). The students worked on a system to conserve water by shutting off the water supply in areas of a building where it was not needed. This is just one example of the variety of research, internship, and co-operative education opportunities available to Carleton students.

In recent years, the Science without Borders program and two exchange agreements with Brazilian universities have attracted a growing number of Brazilian students to study at Carleton.

University of Ottawa: Paving the Way to Success

“Find a job within six months of graduation, or you get another year of education for free,” states the UR Guarantee at the University of Regina, a program exemplifying the university’s commitment to student success.

Experiential learning is another distinguishing feature of the university; students can complement their studies with internships, practicums, and professional placements or take part in the Co-operative Education program. This co-op program is the first of its kind in Western Canada and allows students in a number of fields to alternate semesters of paid work with semesters of study. Upon graduation, a student can have twelve to sixteen months of practical work experience under their belt.

Also considering the City of Regina has the lowest unemployment rate of any city in Canada and is booming with jobs in oil, gas, minerals, agriculture, IT, trade, and finance, career prospects for UR students are at an all time high.

The excellent career-building opportunities and the co-op program are a big draw for international students, who make up 10% of the student body. Science without Borders is also in full swing, with faculty raving about the Brazilian students and their contributions to the classroom.

University of Regina: Career-building Opportunities

Students at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) have cutting-edge research facilities at their fingertips and can engage in work that truly makes a difference.

For example, while studying at the university’s veterinary college, Brazilian PhD student Fernanda Dias researched follicular cell aging in cattle which has applications to human aging and fertility.

The U of S is home to Canada’s only synchrotron, the Canadian Light Source (CLS). Innovative software, allowing remote access to the CLS, means students can share experiments in real time with their faculty advisors in Brazil. With the completion of Brazil’s Sirius synchrotron, Brazilian and Canadian students will be able to collaborate on a wealth of new research opportunities in areas such as agriculture, mining, and advanced materials.

The campus is known for  International Vaccine Centre of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization, the  only Containment Level 3 facility on a Canadian campus. Birthplace of the cobalt-60 machine, the first radiation device to successfully treat cancer, the university has excellent facilities for medical imaging research.

In addition to Science without Borders and the CALDO Consortium, U of S has many burgeoning partnerships in Brazil, particularly in the fields of chemistry, veterinary and animal science, and One Health (an integrated approach to human/animal/ecosystem health).

University of Saskatchewan: A Hotbed for Innovation and Opportunity
