Undergraduate University in Canada’s
Petroleum Capital

February 27, 2015

“Most of the students in Brazil whom I have met, have no idea where Calgary is. It is an attractive location and you have beautiful mountains nearby for trekking or for skiing,” explained Director of International Education at Canada’s Mount Royal University, Ms. Lorna Smith.

Located in scenic Calgary, the medium-sized university is quickly attracting the attention of a new wave of international students, who come for the personalized education – most classes have well under 30 students – and stay for the skiing.

Ms. Smith expanded on the school’s top selling points: “We have good computer facilities, libraries, and sports facilities on campus, so that students can study hard and also exercise and relieve stress. Calgary is a nice sized city, the petroleum capital of Canada, and also very safe.” Furthermore, Canadian credentials and exposure to an international business environment enhance students’ competitiveness in the job market.

Mount Royal University intentionally does not offer graduate studies and has become a leader in undergraduate education, with top-notch programs in nursing, business, journalism, and computer science. Classes are small and the level of student-professor engagement is notable.

In addition, the university runs a comprehensive English language program on campus. The certified English language institute has been operating for 20 years and is an integral part of the international student experience at Mount Royal. “International students who are studying at the institute have access to all university facilities, and live in residence as well,” noted Ms. Smith. International students, including Science without Borders students from Brazil, often undertake a semester of intensive English classes before beginning academic coursework at the university. This provides a smooth transition for students whose English skills are not yet up to par.

Mount Royal also encourages local students to study abroad, and maintains partnerships with universities throughout the world. In Brazil, students may study in Recife, Brasília, Campinas, and Vale do Itajaí. In return, students from Brazilian partner universities are welcomed to Mount Royal University for English language studies, semester programs, entire undergraduate degrees, or through Science without Borders and The Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP).

“If you want personalized education experience with excellent facilities, in a beautiful location, Mount Royal should be your first choice,” concluded Ms. Smith
