Small University Means Big Education at Algoma

February 28, 2015

Algoma University, in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, is located directly on the border with United States (Michigan), a one hour flight from Toronto. The city, known as "the Soo", is very safe, friendly, and a cost-effective option.

Because of its unique Northern geographical location, there are a variety of distinct biological and environmental studies programming options at Algoma that offer direct 'hands on learning,' including invasive species, geomatics, and a variety of research opportunities.

Algoma may be an undergraduate university, but graduate level students and researchers from Brazil visit to conduct projects as visiting scholars. Although the city may appear small, it is home to two significant scientific research centers that have welcomed Brazilian students who wish to complete their internships.

The university’s class size, with plenty of one-on-one interaction with faculty, is another positive attribute that Algoma has to offer. Besides numerous program options, a unique Computer Science stream is Computer Games Technology, the only four-year program of its kind in the country.

Brazilian students on the whole have been very successful with Computer Science and beyond, particularly because they can undertake 4th year thesis projects and receive attention with thesis supervisors to guide them. With 1,600 students at Algoma, small university equals BIG education.
