Germans Bringing Core Research and Development Activities to Brazil

“Apex-Brasil has conducted an intensive study to map the need for R&D centers at varying geographical scales across Brazil. This guidance will help direct German companies interested in establishing local Brazilian R&D centers,” Mr. Petry elaborated.

Companies such as Balluff, a global sensor specialist, have already seen the value of their local presence in Brazil. Balluff established its Brazilian subsidiary 30 years ago. The company’s Vinhedo Research and Development team is thriving, and Balluff is confident about future operations in Brazil and hopes to continue to recruit locally in the country. “We make good products of high technology, therefore we continuously need good people to get the job done and really make a mark in the market. Our Brazilian subsidiary provides good ideas and is a valuable part of the process,” said Balluff’s Managing Director Mr. Michael Unger.

Brazil’s economic growth is attracting a new wave of investment from around the world. Drawn to Brazil’s increasing demand for top-quality products, services, and new technology across all industries, German companies and others are catering their solutions to Brazil and diving head first into this unique market.

Increasingly, these companies are learning the competitive advantages of understanding the local market and tailoring their products to Brazil. As a result, the number of companies establishing local teams in Brazil and investing in on-the-ground research and development centers is on a path of rapid growth.

Apex-Brasil, the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, is a stout advocate for the importance of local investment. “Apex-Brasil is about to launch a new Research and Development campaign. The idea is to bring the R&D centers to Brazil. Multinational companies are already in Brazil, but we believe they can bring more of the research here,” explained Alexandre Petry, Executive Manager of the Investment Attraction Area.

Balluff’s positive sentiments are shared with companies such as Andritz Hydro, which maintains manufacturing facilities including a model test lab in Brazil as well as an office in São Paulo, and hopes to expand in the country. Commented Mr. Peter Magauer, VP of Global Sales Turbines, “We like to work with Brazil; there are many cultural similarities.”

With a 600-employee R&D facility on the campus of the University of Unisinos in Porto Alegre, German software giant SAP is in the process of increasing its R&D capacity in Brazil. Stressed CFO Mr. Luka Mucic, “We consciously strive to ensure that we are closely embedded with customers and with the political environment in different countries. We want to be viewed as a global player, but with strong local roots as well.”

ZF Group, the German automotive technology company, has also made its mark locally in Brazil since its arrival more than 55 years ago, and is even involved with environmental and social projects such as tree-planting and literacy campaigns – the company provides water vessels to help students and teachers get to school in Brazilian Amazon communities. ZF Group maintains several locations across Brazil. Mr. Rolf Lutz, chairman of the South America region, expressed that with their team of 50 engineers exclusively dedicated to R&D in Brazil “we are able to bring products that help reduce green house gasses and improve the profitability of our customers”.

No company understands the importance of catering to the local market better than Melitta, who has created custom products to coffee drinkers throughout the world. “Wake,” a new ready-to-drink coffee drink in Brazil, was designed by Melitta’s local R&D team for Brazil’s young, on-the-go generation.

Mr. Bernardo Wolfson, Managing Director of Melitta in Brazil stressed the importance of Melitta’s long-term dedication to Brazil as a contributing factor to the company’s success: “We have been in Brazil for the last 45 years. We have built a business, and it’s sustainable, and there’s growth year after year. What makes us special, is our commitment to our consumers, and our commitment to continuously bring forward innovative and quality products. We take a lot of pride in knowing that we support the growth of the agribusiness in Brazil.”

These companies and others are seeing real returns on their investment in Brazil. By implementing on-the-ground Research and Development teams who understand the culture and needs of the local Brazilian markets, they are building meaningful, lasting partnerships with a country whose global economic importance is only increasing.
