Brazil Scientific Mobility Program Extended

July 8, 2014

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff announced that the Brazilian government will be extending the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program, offering 100,000 more scholarships from 2015-2018. The first phase of the program, spanning from 2010-2014, aims to award 101,000 scholarships by September of this year.

“This is a program designed to ensure Brazil is able to be innovative, and to generate interest in the sciences and the application of technology in all areas including industry and agriculture and especially to facilitate research in basic sciences,” noted President Rousseff.

Now entering its fourth year, the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP), also known as Science without Borders, has successfully enabled tens of thousands of bright, innovative young Brazilians to engage in international research and learning at universities throughout the world in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). With programs ranging from undergraduate semesters abroad to full PhDs and visiting research opportunities, this Brazilian initiative is creating a new generation of global-minded scientific leaders. Sponsored by CAPES and CNPq and administered in the US by the Institute of International Education (IIE), the BSMP is also supported by hundreds of international corporate sponsors, giving students the opportunity to gain hands-on internship and research experience with companies ranging from General Electric to Boeing.

Through the BSMP, students generally study abroad for two semesters, commencing in either the fall or the spring.
