A Wealth of Opportunity at the University of Missouri - Kansas City

August 9, 2014

The School of Computing and Engineering (SCE) is known for its small class sizes and personal attention. Students work with faculty who are recognized nationally and internationally for their contributions to the field through research, presentations and publications.

SCE welcomes international students and works to make the transition to Kansas City as smooth as possible. All SCE students receive academic counseling to ensure they register for the right courses and remain on track for graduation.  Scholarship opportunities such as the Dean’s International Scholar Award (DISA), allow international students to receive generous scholarships that cover a significant portion of international tuition.

Interested in accelerating your education? SCE’s BSMS program allows you to complete your bachelor’s and master’s degrees in just five years, at undergraduate tuition rates. This program positions students for higher paying jobs upon completion of their degrees, while saving them significant time and money.

At SCE, your college experience extends beyond the classroom. With more than 20 student teams and organizations in SCE alone, you can take your interests to the extreme while forging lifelong friendships. Explore everything from building an off-road vehicle on the Baja Racing team to designing a robot to perform unique tasks on the Robotics Team.

Degree programs at SCE prepare students for some of the highest paying and most in-demand careers.

The Applied Language Institute (ALI) at the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) is an intensive English program that feels like a family.

ALI provides up to 26 hours of instruction a week to individuals and groups who want to learn English for academic, professional, or personal reasons. Semester-long and shorter programs are available, and small classes are offered at all levels of instruction. The institute also offers English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher education, and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) certificate programs.

In addition to university housing, ALI offers a home-stay program in which students live with a U.S. family to gain a more in-depth cultural experience. The institute regularly organizes social events that help students improve their English and their understanding of U.S. culture.

Many departments at UMKC accept the ALI recommendation for academic study, and students who complete their language study at the institute are not required to take the TOEFL or IELTS to begin their academic programs. All ALI students are guaranteed partial scholarships. Some high-level ESL courses may count as electives toward graduation.

The Henry W. Bloch School of Management at UMKC focuses on entrepreneurial and innovative thinking as the foundation for transforming talent and achieving sustainable growth in for-profit, public and nonprofit enterprises.

The Bloch School is a nationally and globally pre-eminent school of management. Its MBA and undergraduate degree in business with emphases in entrepreneurship have been named national model programs by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship. UMKC is home to three of the top innovation management scholars in the world, and the undergraduate and graduate entrepreneurship programs are ranked among the top 20 in the nation by Princeton Review. The nonprofit management emphasis in the Master of Public Administration program is ranked No. 15 nationwide by U.S. News & World Report.

To continue the success and growth of the Bloch School, benefactor Henry Bloch donated $32 million for a state-of-the-art building to house the school’s graduate, executive and entrepreneurship programs. Bloch Executive Hall opened to students in August 2013.

College of Arts and Sciences is home to 18 departments and is the largest academic unit on the UMKC campus. The STEM disciplines within the college include chemistry, geosciences, mathematics and statistics, and physics and astronomy. Each department offers advanced research opportunities for all students, one-on-one student-faculty interaction and tailored academic advising.

CHEMISTRY

Research focus on investigating molecular and physical chemistry and novel materials. One example is our work on developing advanced methods to form cleaner fuels by using sunlight to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This would result in lower carbon emissions and footprints at a time when global climate change is a major issue.
