World-Renowned Yale University: Connected, Accessible, Global

August 5, 2014

As a member of the Ivy League, a group of long-established U.S. colleges and universities with the highest of academic and social prestige, Yale University has a reputation for turning bright, promising students into future world leaders.

Yale students and faculty think outside the box, push boundaries, and develop innovative solutions to issues ranging from economic development in Yale's hometown of New Haven to international public health threats from pollution.

Nearly one in five Yale students are international, and more than half are from public American high schools. This on-campus diversity facilitates creativity in teamwork, which is evident throughout the university. Yale students are independent thinkers who become experts in their fields, yet have the capacity to contribute toward a wide array of subject matters. Yale’s innovative Appropriate Technology and the Developing World class invites students from all majors to work together to solve real-world issues such as increasing farming productivity in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Ms. Shana N. Schneider, Director of Communications at the Yale Office of International Affairs, stressed the breadth of opportunities available to students: “While Yale offers one of the top educations in all areas, what is unique is that you are not restricted to the resources in your one area of study. Students and scholars at Yale truly have access to the entire university. For example, if you are a student in the Physics department, you can still take a class at the School of Management or even the School of Art!”

This type of open-university system attracts students from over 100 countries, including Brazil. Brazilians have always thrived in the Yale community. For example, when chemical engineering freshman Paulo Costa accidently enrolled in Introductory Microeconomics, he discovered a newfound interest, and now works as an economist and designed a financial literacy education program for Rio de Janeiro’s Secretary of Education.

"Students and scholars at Yale truly have access to the entire university."

Yale partners with Brazil on many levels. Yale students have been studying Brazil and the Portuguese language for decades, and the exchange of both faculty and students between the two countries dates back to the 20th century. Today, the school maintains links with Brazil through the Brazil Science Mobility Program, the Global Health Leadership Institute, the Law School’s Latin American Linkage Program, the Council on Latin American and Iberian Studies, and the Fox International Fellowships exchange with the University of São Paulo, to name a few. In addition, several on-campus organizations promote Brazilian culture, including The Brazil Club and the Latin American Student’s Organization. The Brazil-Yale relationship is a strong, long-standing one with nothing but a promising future.
