Welcoming International Students to New York with Open Arms

August 8, 2014

In the State University of New York System (SUNY), The College at Brockport is well known for offering specialized academic programs. The famous Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Education department has attracted students from Brazil and around the world. The science departments are equally renowned, and include unique programs such as meteorology, medical technology, and environmental science. Other international students are drawn to the AACSB-accredited business school and the top ranked Modern Dance program.

Brockport is truly invested in the futures of all students, and helps to facilitate internships and research opportunities with companies and government institutions in New York; Washington, D.C.; and around the world. Dr. Ralph Trecartin, Assistant Provost for International Education at Brockport, explained how a Brockport education helps students achieve their goals: “We send a lot of undergraduate students to conferences. We help them get published. If a student really wants to go to one of the best graduate schools, coming to Brockport at the undergraduate level is an absolutely fantastic way to get ready.”

Cross-cultural exchange is the norm at Brockport. The university ensures that international students are well integrated into campus life, and many choose to enroll in on-campus English classes and participate in organized social activities with local American students. The school recently hosted a successful World Cup party attracting students from across campus to come together engaging in several Brazil themed activities. International students also enjoy the semiannual trip one of the country’s most popular destinations, Niagara Falls, in addition to an annual International Festival, and regular outings to the local markets in nearby Rochester, N.Y.

Associate Director of International Student Services and Recruitment, Aleta Anthony, described the enthusiasm American students express toward incoming international students: “Our students have formally mentored the new international students that are coming in. They help them with our orientation for the new students. They have even inspired us to do more programming for the students because they are so outgoing and they have great ideas and are always willing to help out to make those functions happen.”

International students take advantage of all Brockport has to offer. Brand-new campus facilities, competitive sports teams, top-notch academic programs, and a welcoming, diverse, student body explain why the number of international students enrolling at Brockport is increasing every year.
