DePaul University: The Global Classroom

August 4, 2014

Nestled in the heart of the nation's third largest city of Chicago, DePaul University is one of the country's largest private universities.

Since 1898, DePaul University has been prioritizing students through a teaching-focused approach to learning, offering an incredibly low student to faculty ratio alongside consistently high-ranking student satisfaction levels.

Offering more than 200 undergraduate majors and a large variety of graduate programs across ten different Colleges and Schools, the DePaul approach to teaching is unparalleled elsewhere in the country. Graduate students do not teach undergraduate courses; which are instead taught by uniquely trained faculty, comprised of research-active Ph.D.’s and industry leaders. Their expertise brings real practical industry experience into the classroom, making DePaul a center for experiential learning.

"You find yourself immersed in a vital center of the global economy and at the same time housed in an institution that focuses on you and cares for you as an individual, as a whole person.” - G. Besana

With 25,000 students, diversity is embraced at DePaul. A new drive is underway to double the number of international undergraduate students. International students benefit from an extensive support network including an exemplary Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), airport pick-up, conversation partners, structured intercultural activities, and an international student mentoring program. The university’s English Language Academy (ELA), with its unique holistic approach to language and culture acquisition, is considered to be the premier language academy in the Midwest.

DePaul prides itself in its rich and organic relationship with the city of Chicago, which was ranked the top metro area for foreign direct investments in 2013.  Deeply rooted within the community, the DePaul classroom extends beyond the university into the resource-rich city of Chicago. With an array of internships and community-based work placements, studying at DePaul is studying in a growing global business hub.

Dr. GianMario Besana, Associate Provost for Global Engagement noted, “Studying at DePaul is a fantastic experience. You find yourself immersed in a vital center of the global economy and at the same time housed in an institution that focuses on you and cares for you as an individual, as a whole person.”

The success of the Brazil Science Mobility Program (BSMP) has seen a growth in the number of students participating in this program. DePaul has also forged strategic academic partnerships with the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio (PUC-Rio) and the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana (PUC-Parana).

Through its relationships in Brazil and hosting BSMP students, DePaul aims to solidify and further its progress with Brazil.
