SUNY Plattsburgh: A Hallmark of Successful Education

August 7, 2014

The State University of New York College at Plattsburgh, also known as SUNY Plattsburgh, is a comprehensive four-year, public, liberal arts college in Plattsburgh, New York. Accessible to New York City by air, rail, and highway and only one hour by car from cosmopolitan Montreal, the school is home to a vibrant community of renowned teachers and nationally recognized scholars, dedicated to engaging students and helping them to achieve their goals.

From engaging with professors who are leaders in their field; to hands-on learning through undergraduate research, study abroad, internships, and more; SUNY Plattsburgh is the smart investment choice for an education that leads to success.

While the school of business and economics is one of SUNY Plattsburgh’s largest, the college has also placed a strong commitment to its science programs, with a new USD $40 million building. Covering more than 60 academic majors, the SUNY Plattsburgh curriculum is as diverse as its student body.

"How does the faculty member have to really think about the lecture in the context of not just students from New York State, or from this part of the state or the country, but students from all over the world?”
- J. Vogl

Moreover, many of these courses are developed in collaboration with students to address unique needs and specific career goals. For example, the school’s global supply chain management courses were born out of the university’s desire to build upon its strengths in the undergraduate business program, but also to leverage its unique location and foster its strong relationships with global corporate institutions.

“Some of our students who have recently finished the global supply chain management program are getting great jobs because there are very few people with that expertise,” shared SUNY Plattsburgh Assistant Vice President, Global Education, Jackie Girard Vogl.

Similarly, SUNY Plattsburgh looks to expand its global relationships to include Brazilian institutions. Enthusiasm from recent university visits is propelling the Brazil program and possible partnerships. At the crux of these relationships is the university’s Global Education Office, which provides a single integrated office for international studies, supporting students from over 60 countries and over 400 study abroad locations.

“Students that come to study at Plattsburgh often provide natural connections and relationships with home institutions and these department to department connections are a valuable resource to all,” added Ms. Vogl.

From the close interaction with faculty members to new campus facilities, students at Plattsburgh have many invaluable resources available to them. Among the most valuable is a comprehensive curriculum and cohesive Global Education Office that better prepares students to live and work in an increasingly global environment.

Perhaps it is this preparation for success or its family-like community that finds SUNY Plattsburgh ranked #1 in the United States and #2 in the world for post-enrollment student satisfaction in a 2012 International Student Barometer survey.

Ms. Vogl passionately added, “What I see here on campus is a truly unusual academic environment. This is ideal - a class of 24 with people from all over the world. How does that change the conversation? How does the faculty member have to really think about the lecture in the context of not just students from New York State, or from this part of the state or the country, but students from all over the world?”
