Engage in Active Learning at SUNY Geneseo

August 10, 2014

The State University of New York (SUNY) Geneseo prides itself on academic excellence and promoting student growth. This small liberal arts college in the heart of New York’s wine country is a premier institution with a global focus, encouraging students to achieve their highest academic ambitions.

This international, committed focus is reflected in the achievements of the Geneseo student body. Almost 40% of Geneseo students study abroad during their undergraduate careers and 30% graduate with either double majors or a dual major and minor. Class sizes are intimate with a student to faculty ratio of 19:1, and 60% of classes have fewer than 30 students.

Geneseo Assistant Provost for International Programs, Rebecca Lewis, and Geneseo Director of International Student Affairs, Mary Hope, shared that Geneseo students are well-rounded and kind individuals. Students are engaged both in and out of their classes, getting involved with volunteer work as well as diving into self-driven research opportunities. With that being said, Geneseo commonly ranks among the highest percentage of students participating in community service.

The university offers true academic excellence and prioritizes interdisciplinary opportunities. The pre-med, biology, and bio-chemistry degrees are particularly strong and the physics program ranks among the top ten in U.S. national rankings. Geneseo is also conveniently located near Rochester, New York, where many Geneseo students enjoy competitive research and career opportunities.

Professional programs combine education and business in a wide range of specializations. For example, petroleum geology is popular with students interested in pursuing futures in the oil and gas industry, and might be of particular interest to Brazilian students. Research with faculty is encouraged, such as research projects in biofuels.

The Geneseo campus also offers a wide range of extracurricular opportunities including award-winning leadership development programs, competitive intercollegiate sports teams, and more than 170 student-led organizations.

The International Student and Scholar Services Office provides students with advice for finding internships, on-campus and off-campus employment, travel, and academic support. Due to this support and the spirit of community engagement on campus, students tend to integrate quickly into the broader student body.

Geneseo boasts a litany of awards for academic and facility quality, internationalization, and co-curricular integration. This premier liberal arts institution invites global students to partake in a transformational learning experience grounded in a tradition of excellence.
