Rutgers: A Globally-Engaged Community

August 4, 2014

When seeking a premier research university, a look at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, showcases a vibrant community and legacy of innovation. Rutgers stands not only as a Top 25 research university, but as the state’s preeminent, comprehensive public institution of higher education.

Beyond its role as a recognized national leader, Rutgers is a place of history and tradition. Founded in 1766, Rutgers is the eighth oldest college in the nation. The school is a member of the prestigious Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the nation’s premier higher education consortium of top-tier research institutions.

"Ensuring that our students are fully equipped to address the global challenges of our time is part of our university’s mission of teaching, research, and service.” - R. Barchi.

Rutgers also offers one of the nation’s largest and most diverse student bodies in the Northeast Corridor within the most ethnically diverse state, engaged with extensive big pharma and biotech industries and fueled by the nation’s highest-density workforce of engineers and scientists.

Today, the university’s array of schools and academic departments, along with more than 300 research centers and institutes, both domestic and abroad, host cutting-edge, dynamic programs that encourage students and faculty to be engaged in new discoveries and challenges in an increasingly interconnected world.

"Ensuring that our students are fully equipped to address the global challenges of our time is part of our university’s mission of teaching, research, and service,” shared Rutgers University President Robert L. Barchi.

In addition to renowned faculty working with colleagues around the world to develop international programs and curriculum, Rutgers welcomes thousands of international students and scholars to campus each year. This year, more than 6,000 international students will study at Rutgers, further emphasizing its global reach.

Rutgers students can choose from more than 100 program options in 40 countries through Rutgers Study Abroad programs, attend conferences and briefings through the university’s affiliation with the UN, or seek other opportunities through Rutgers Centers for Global Advancement and International Affairs.

Through study abroad, joint research projects, and undergraduate and scholarly exchanges, Rutgers has several long-standing partnerships including the University of São Paulo (USP). In fact, the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS) at Rutgers has been exchanging undergraduate students with USP since the 1970s.

Rutgers University–Camden has created two new international service learning courses in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador de Bahia as part of its active cultivation of international study-tour options for students during winter intercession and spring break.

The success of the exchange between the United States and Brazil laid the foundation for further educational opportunities between Rutgers and Brazilian institutions such as the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP) and the Fulbright Commission in Brazil. Rutgers is a top Fulbright producer, behind only Harvard and University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. Going forward, the Fulbright Commission plans to establish a Brazil visiting scholar position at Rutgers, focusing on global health, research, and teaching.

Comprehensive international programs and strategic partnerships will ensure that Rutgers remains an illustrious institution with a vibrant academic environment, leading-edge research programs, and a globally-engaged student body and community.
