Xavier University Offers International Students Diverse Curriculum and Community

August 4, 2014

Recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 10 universities in the Midwest for the last 18 years, Xavier University’s mission is to educate each student holistically: intellectually, morally, and spiritually.

With 53 countries represented in the student body, the mid-sized Jesuit university in Cincinnati, Ohio has a curriculum and a community that supports and celebrates its international students.

Xavier has built a relationship with Brazil through various Jesuit contacts. By the close of this school year, The Brazilian Science Mobility Program will have nearly 20 participants, and the men’s basketball team will be Brazil-bound this summer as part of a nine-day athletic-cultural excursion.

Still one of Xavier’s biggest selling points for international students is its highly-competitive Intensive English Program (IEP), accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). Depending upon their initial English language proficiency, students take courses at the high beginning to advanced levels, from one to four semesters. With graduate degrees in TESOL, applied linguistics, or related fields, the seasoned IEP instructors bring a great deal of experience to the classroom.

Xavier also offers top-tier programs in business, healthcare, and science. The rigorous curriculum offers students extensive, in-depth training and hands-on opportunities through experiential learning.

The College of Business, for example, offers finance and management courses, but also has an executive mentorship program, extensive networking opportunities, and a Xavier Launch-A-Business program, which lets local business owners work with students to develop real-world entrepreneurial solutions.

Science programs range from the natural sciences to biophysics, applied chemistry and engineering physics, while healthcare students have the option to major in athletic training, psychology, and health services administration.

Cincinnati’s extensive network of hospitals makes it an ideal place to study medicine as well. The Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is among the top 10 in the United States.

While Xavier currently has more than 250 international students enrolled, the school hopes to continue to expand its global footprint and attract more students from Brazil. Due to its student-centered focus, Xavier believes it is a school where international students can thrive as they cultivate their talents and skills, while gaining invaluable experiences both inside and outside of the classroom.
