Intensive English Language Courses and Requirements

August 4, 2014

In the STEM fields, adequate knowledge of the English language is key to a successful academic experience in the United States. American universities provide extensive resources to ensure visiting students and scholars are well-prepared for rigorous coursework, as well as fully integrated into the local culture, customs, and learning environment. Many schools offer English language courses throughout the year, and intensive summer classes for those wishing to become quickly up-to-speed before the school year begins. Universities, as well as private language institutes, offer a wide range of accredited short- and long-term English programs, often including specialized courses in business English, accent modification, and vocabulary building. Most programs are comprehensive and offer optional accommodation and local cultural excursions.

Students scoring 79 or higher on the TOEFL exam can begin their studies without enrolling in an English as a Second Language (ESL) course. Students scoring below 78 (minimum score of 61) are assigned to a 6 to 8 week intensive English course prior to commencing their studies. Students cannot take ESL classes while enrolled in academic courses.
