Brazilian students should expect cultural differences when studying in the US, whether in the classroom or in social settings. We’ve created 8 tips for students and advisors to better prepare Brazilian students enrolling in the US.

  • Brazilians value collectivism, whereas Americans are taught ideals based on individualism. American universities highly value individual input in the classroom; participation is often a factor in the grading process. Discussions are encouraged as sharing of individual opinions is part of the learning process.

  • Independent learning is expected of students. Homework and individual reading is often prepared prior to the classroom lectures.

  • American universities typically offer a higher level of hands-on learning, integrating classroom learning with practical experience opportunities.

  • The US is a diverse country and regions offer vastly different experiences in geography and culture. Many US universities are located in rural or suburban locations, which can be a shock for students coming from large cities. However, many of the small college towns offer safety, a sense of community, and a true American experience.

  • Professors are generally more accessible in the US. Visiting professors during "office hours" or making an appointment is encouraged.

  • Although Americans have a warm, welcoming reputation, some American students have a limited global perspective. Dialogue with international students is the key to developing more understanding and building relationships.

  • Holistic personal development is an essential element of the American college experience. Many students participate in a wide range of activities including sports, special interest clubs, and social clubs such as fraternities and sororities. Get involved where possible to absorb American culture.

  • Brazilians are casual while Americans are relatively more reserved. The boisterous, animated conversation style of Brazilians can be considered rude in the US. Keep this in mind when initially meeting American students.
