IUPUI: Partners in Growing Global Knowledge

August 8, 2014

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), a partnership between Indiana University and Purdue University, provides unique opportunities for cross-discipline learning, the advancement of research and teaching, as well as partnership and community engagement. Renowned for service learning, civic engagement, and its nationally-ranked programs in engineering and environmental and health sciences, IUPUI is Indiana's premier urban research campus. Located in the vibrant downtown center of Indiana's capital city, it boasts the second largest medical school in the United States and attracts $300-$400 million in external research grants and contracts annually.

With more than 200 programs across 19 schools, IUPUI offers a distinctive range of bachelor's, master's, professional, and doctoral degrees that promote educational, cultural, and economic development through innovative collaborations, external partnerships, and a strong commitment to diversity. IUPUI recognizes students as partners in learning and values the distinct perspectives generated from a student body comprised of more than 30,000 students representing all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and 142 foreign countries.

International partnerships further reflect a mission towards increasing the global competencies of IUPUI students by engaging in collaborative education and research across the world's most vital economic regions.

Many of IUPUI’s international students hail from India, China, and Saudi Arabia, but the university is also growing connections and drawing interest in South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, and Brazil. For example, a partnership between Indiana University and the University of São Paulo is intended to encourage broad connections and create opportunities to leverage IUPUI’s program strengths in the biomedical sciences, engineering, high-performance manufacturing, and environmental health. Brazilian students at IUPUI have also broadened their summer learning experiences by pursuing research projects in cutting-edge fields, such as renewable energy, or enrolling in a range of elective courses that extend their learning beyond their science-related majors into areas such as communications and economics.

Similarly, IUPUI partners in programs that further incentivize collaboration between the United States and Brazil for purposes of academic research and experiential learning opportunities such as the Brazil Science Mobility Program. When students and faculty members return to Brazil, they bring with them new ways of thinking and perhaps most importantly, solidify the important role of international study in the preparation of Brazil’s future professionals and leaders.

IUPUI strives to advance intellectual growth through research, creative activity, teaching, learning, and civic engagement. International partnerships further reflect a mission towards increasing the global competencies of IUPUI students by engaging in collaborative education and research across the world's most vital economic regions.

IUPUI invites Brazilian students and all those looking to expand their education in a vibrant, dynamic environment to come explore Indiana’s preeminent urban university.
