Indian Hills Community College
With highly specialized programs such as aviation, laser technology, culinary arts, and robotics, Indian Hills Community College ensures its graduates will be experts in their fields and continue on to meaningful, exciting careers. Those wishing to pursue a more traditional academic track are encouraged to complete a two-year Associate degree by enrolling in pre-major and foundation courses necessary to transfer to a four-year college of their choice.
This year, Indian Hills hosted the 10th Annual Indian Hills Diversity Conference and invited influential speakers to discuss current topics in society such as disabilities and their influence on perceptions of beauty. Always looking to expand its global outreach, Indian Hills actively recruits students from other countries, including Brazilians, who have a history of success playing for the school’s soccer, golf, and other athletic teams. The school’s relationship with Brazil is a long one, and Brazilians have been studying at Indian Hills well before the inception of the BSMP.
Indiana State University
Indiana State University (ISU) boasts 1,000 international students who find themselves well-integrated at this medium-sized public research university. The university is strategically accessible to all major centers of industry in the Midwest, while the small-town feel of Terre Haute provides a supportive learning environment with opportunities to meaningfully engage with professors and peers at ISU.
ISU partners with Interlink, the renowned English language program, ensuring the success of incoming international students. International ISU students also participate in programs such as International Coffee Hour, a casual event that promotes cross-cultural communications on campus. ISU has recently partnered with the Federal University of Bahia and the Federal University of Pará, and looks forward to strengthening relations with Brazil to create a lasting, mutually beneficial partnership.
Indiana University at Bloomington
The flagship campus of the Indiana University (IU) system, Indiana University at Bloomington is a safe, small-town university with impressive rankings in programs such as information systems, business, and public affairs. The comprehensive intensive English program is part of the reason IU Bloomington is home to almost 7,500 international students, who take part in nearly sixty international student groups and enroll in IU Bloomington’s prestigious schools, such as the Jacobs School of Music, the Media School, the School of Global and International Studies, and the School of Public Health.
IU Bloomington has ties with the University of São Paulo and the University of Brasilia, and is looking to create more partnerships with universities across Brazil. Formal agreements between IU and universities around the world provide a path for international students to study at IU Bloomington, create study abroad opportunities for IU Bloomington students, and make joint research and teaching possible.
Intercultural Communications College
The Intercultural Communications College (ICC Hawaii) encourages foreign students to speak English 100% of the time. With twenty-five years of experience, ICC Hawaii has long served foreign students from over twenty countries as a bridge to reach their academic and professional goals. English programs at the ICC Hawaii are fully accredited and range from University Gateway programs to Cambridge ESOL Examination preparation to business English classes.
Located just minutes from the beach in Honolulu, Hawaii, ICC Hawaii offers a fun, welcoming learning environment where students can mingle with locals and practice their English in a tropical setting not too different from that of Brazil. Students appreciate the sense of community at ICC Hawaii, which offers students accommodation and regularly organizes activities such as hula lessons, hiking excursions, movie nights, and cruises. ICC Hawaii students complete their programs with a uniquely Hawaiian experience and the English language skills needed to succeed in their next social, academic, or professional endeavor.
Jackson State University
Those looking for an exciting yet academically challenging college experience in the heart of the American South will be pleased with their choice to attend Jackson State University (JSU). This research-intensive school offers academic programs ranging from liberal arts to engineering and technology, small class sizes, and dozens of extracurricular activities. The university takes pride in providing a diverse, welcoming environment, and students find Jackson, Mississippi to be culturally interesting yet affordable. Strategically located in the state’s capital, JSU student have access to a plethora of internship, research, and community service opportunities. Kent State University
Kent State University offers a comfortable, suburban learning environment in which students feel welcome and safe. In addition, students appreciate the ongoing investment in student facilities across all eight regional Kent State campuses. Kent State values diversity, and continuously strives to increase its global outreach. The university has an active Office of Global Education, whose role is to facilitate opportunities for exchange between Kent State and dozens of countries around the world. Kent State maintains active partnerships with the Federal University of Minas Gerais, the Federal University of Santa Catarina, and the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana. Kent State opened a local office in Curitiba last year, and is looking forward to a long-lasting relationship between the Kent State community and Brazil.
Kettering University
Michigan’s Kettering University is a STEM-focused institution with a 95-year-long reputation of academic excellence. The Kettering experience extends well beyond the classroom as students consistently report their enthusiasm for the university’s extracurricular activities. International students in particular have enjoyed participating in the soccer club, the International Club, Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru), and the Outdoors Club, the latter of which organizes an annual trip to Canada’s Blue Mountain Ski Resorts.
In the classroom, hands-on learning is the norm, and students rave about the intensively experiential, multidisciplinary bioengineering course which utilizes concepts from anatomy, engineering, business, and technology to address real-world issues in health sciences. The small size of the school enables high levels of student-faculty-peer engagement, as well as individualized attention and assistance with finding internships, research, and other experiential learning opportunities. Kettering’s facilities are maintained to keep pace with advancing technology, and the school boasts a LEED certified Innovation Center for entrepreneurs, a crash testing and safety research lab, and one of the nation’s only university-based haptics labs. Lawrence University
Founded in 1847, Lawrence University uniquely integrates a college of liberal arts and sciences with a world-class conservatory of music, both devoted exclusively to undergraduate education. Ranked among America’s best colleges by Forbes, it was selected for inclusion in the book “Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools That Will Change the Way You Think About College.” Individualized learning, the development of multiple interests and community engagement are central to the Lawrence experience. Lawrence draws its 1,500 students from nearly every state and more than 50 countries.
Lawrence University is proud to make its home Appleton, Wisconsin. Appleton is the cultural and commercial heart of the Fox Cities, a thriving economic area with a population of about 225,000. Ranked as one of the safest cities in the United States and noted for its high quality of life – Appleton has the cosmopolitan feel of a large city with the accessibility of a smaller town. Appleton has an airport with easy connections from Chicago, Minneapolis, Detroit, and several other major hubs around the US.
Scholarships for international students range from $5,000-$32,000 per year. Cost of attendance is approximately $50,000.
Lock Haven University
Lock Haven University (LHU) recently hosted the school’s first Brazilian student through the BSMP program, and with great success. With newly built technology facilities and an excellent international student support system, LHU hopes to attract many more Brazilian and other international students for both short-term exchange and full degree programs. Foreign students are offered assistance with the visa process, academic and cultural advising, and an ongoing orientation program that includes excursions to Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and New York City. Lock Haven University is a medium-sized university with a global outreach, and students can choose to study abroad at one of dozens of countries around the world. The local Culture through Coffee program recently featured LHU’s own BSMP student alongside an American LHU student newly returned from studying abroad at the University of Fortaleza. Together, they shared Brazilian stories, food, and culture with the Lock Haven community.
