Vassar College

Vassar College maintains a small, carefully selected student body in order to offer a strong liberal arts education with valuable components such as the freshmen writing requirement and the foreign language requirement. Vassar students receive a well-rounded, multidisciplinary education and regularly attend prestigious medical and business schools post-graduation. Students are able to focus on their academics in quaint, safe Poughkeepsie, yet can reach downtown New York City in only two hours.

Vassar’s environment attracts international students from over seventy countries, who participate in orientation and receive assistance with class registration. Brazilian students have become integrated into Vassar life; they even have their own choir. Vassar hopes to expand relations with Brazil, and welcomes Brazilian students for a semester at Vassar or as four-year degree students.

Virginia State University

Virginia State University’s (VSU) impressive 236-acre campus features a 280,000-volume library with access to over 1,200 journals, a new science and engineering center, a 24-hour computer technology center, and a 416-acre farm and agricultural research center. With the advantages of being a large public university close to major East Coast cities, VSU has the resources to raise future leaders in computer science, business, engineering, technology, education, and agriculture. As a Historically Black University, Brazilian students also enjoy a history of on-campus diversity. VSU strives to “build a better world,” and students appreciate the collaborative, supportive learning environment of the VSU community.

West Virginia University

Brazil has been on West Virginia University’s (WVU) radar for more than twenty years. Extensive efforts to promote WVU-Brazil student and faculty relations have paid off, and the school is now home to a large Brazilian community which includes several dozen Brazil Scientific Mobility Program students. WVU strives to build lasting links with Brazil, and offers Brazilian Portuguese classes on campus along with community and campus outreach activities to help international students better integrate. “WVU is a school with international reach. While our students, scholars, and partners come from 110 countries, all fifty states, and some U.S. territories, they are united by the Mountaineer pride and school spirit for which our campus is known,” said Mr. Jose V. Sartarelli, Chief Global Officer at WVU.

West Virginia University has something for everyone. Founded in 1867, the Morgantown, West Virginia school offers an excellent quality of student life (Morgantown was recently rated the “Number 1 Small City in America”), and its status as a land-grant institution means students will have little trouble becoming involved with important research. WVU offers an impressive 191 academic programs at all levels. Brazilian students appreciate the wide range of STEM programs, which include fields very applicable to their own country, such as mining engineering, civil and environmental engineering, and petroleum and natural gas engineering.
