North Dakota State University
North Dakota State University (NDSU) is a public land grant institution with a reputation for putting students first. NDSU is distinctive as a student-focused, land-grant, research university, ranked by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education among the Top 108 public and private universities in the country. A medium-sized university located in metropolitan Fargo, students can choose from 100 academic programs, yet classes are small enough that students get to know their professors. Fargo offers an affordable, high-quality lifestyle with plenty of local coffee shops, theaters, and parks in this student-centric area.
The university hosts over 1,000 international students, including several from Brazil, and provides ongoing support such as holidays with host families, emergency support, coffee hours, and Brazil student night. NDSU has agreements with several Brazilian universities and is looking to expand on these important partnerships.
Northern Arizona University
At Northern Arizona University (NAU), students and faculty continuously work together on groundbreaking research with impacts well beyond the NAU community. The university’s most recent news headlines offer a glimpse into this forward-thinking institution: “NAU biologist confirms there are microorganisms native to Antarctica” and “NAU’s unmanned aerial vehicle improves remote sensing” are some of the latest exciting topics. Founded in 1899, NAU attracts students and scholars from around the world to its 145 academic programs. Programs in engineering and other STEM fields are consistently ranked amongst the top in the nation. Students are encouraged to participate in competitions, professional societies, conferences, and internships, and the Design4Practice program encourages team-based problem-solving designed to mimic real-world engineering issues.
Drawn to NAU’s highly-ranked STEM programs, international students are numerous and well cared for on campus. In addition to an intensive English language program, many students opt to take a transition course, International Student Success, which covers crucial topics from immigration to the idiosyncrasies of American social relationships. International collaboration and exchange is a top priority, and NAU looks forward to increasing its number of strategic partnerships with Brazil and countries worldwide.
Northwestern University
Northwestern University is a medium-sized, private institution with a reputation for providing students with individual attention, resources, and unique opportunities to prepare them for the working world. Its location next to vibrant Chicago provides myriad opportunities for internships and community outreach, as well as an enriching cultural experience. Top-ranked academic programs include journalism, business, law, education, chemistry, and engineering.
Northwestern encourages a global outlook and welcomes foreign students to enroll in intensive English classes as well as regular programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The university stresses the importance of a clear, well thought-out application to showcase the student’s ability to thrive in an academically challenging university. Northwestern currently maintains joint research programs with Brazil in globally-important areas such as stem cell research, as well as exchange programs with the business and law schools. On campus, Brazilian culture is shared and promoted by the Luso-Brazilian Association, and Northwestern hopes to encourage further student and faculty exchange in both directions.
Ohio Northern University
US News & World Report has consistently ranked Ohio Northern University (ONU) as one of the top universities in the American Midwest. As a small, private university affiliated with the United Methodist Church, ONU offers numerous advantages such as small class sizes, engagement with professors, and a close-knit community with many social activities and student organizations. Academic programs include business, law, engineering, and pharmacy, and students are encouraged to take courses in different fields and engage in hands-on experience throughout their studies.
Some of ONU’s top values are collaboration, diversity, and service, and the university boasts an active student community that works together and welcomes international students to its safe, supportive environment. ONU maintains several international exchange programs, currently hosts 25 Brazil Scientific Mobility Program students, and is looking forward to increasing Brazilian student enrollment in the very near future.
The Ohio State University
The Ohio State University’s campus is one of America’s largest and most comprehensive. More than 64,000 students select from 165 undergraduate majors and more than 200 Master's, doctoral and professional degree programs. As Ohio’s best and one of the nation’s Top 20 public universities, Ohio State is further recognized by a top-rated academic medical center and a premier cancer hospital and research center.
Ohio State is a preeminent global university fostering the growth of faculty research around the world as well as supporting and engaging more than 6,000 international students and 1,900 international visiting scholars annually. Ohio State will open a Global Gateway office in São Paulo in September 2014, which will facilitate innovative partnerships with Brazilian universities and provide new ways to connect with international corporations. The Brazil Gateway also will serve as a location for international student recruitment, a portal for study abroad and a point of contact to strengthen connections between Ohio State students, faculty, alumni and friends of the university. Ohio State has enjoyed strong ties to Brazil for more than 50 years and plans to become highly involved with the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program.
Pitzer College
One of the five members of the Claremont Colleges consortium, Southern California’s Pitzer College boasts an incredibly diverse and academically challenging environment where international collaboration plays an integral role in the Pitzer experience. Studying abroad is the norm at Pitzer, which in turn welcomes international students from over twenty countries each year.
Selective admissions criteria and small class sizes facilitate a strong liberal arts education, while Pitzer’s proximity to metropolitan Los Angeles links students to myriad internship and employment opportunities.

Purdue University, Calumet
Purdue University at Calumet is an institution with many strengths. Part of the Purdue University system, Purdue Calumet is a public land grant institution where rigorous academic programs are balanced with required experiential learning, where students gain meaningful real-world experience in the form of internships, service projects, research, and more.
International students, of which Purdue Calumet hosts 725 from forty countries, are also given opportunities to pursue research and internships, an undertaking made attainable thanks to Purdue Calumet’s extensive offerings of English language classes and activities for foreigners. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious technological universities, encouraging hands-on experience from the undergraduate level and known for consistently sending off new graduates to full-time employment. RPI strives to produce creative, problem-solving individuals, and welcomes a diversity of students from all around the world – currently 12% of the student body is international. RPI believes in a balance of theoretical and applied learning, and practices this approach in the schools of business, architecture, and social sciences as well as in the technological and scientific programs. In addition to hosting several undergraduates, RPI has recently started hosting PhD students from Brazil via the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program and looks forward to enrolling more Brazilians at all levels in the near future.
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (RHIT) has been America’s top-ranked undergraduate engineering school for the past fifteen years, a fact evidenced by the well-employed, strong network of alumni. Academic programs at RHIT include electrical, computer, software, civil, mechanical, biomedical, and chemical engineering – the latter of which was the first degree of its kind in the US. In addition, students may specialize in niche engineering programs such as optical engineering and engineering physics. Initiatives such as Rose-Hulman Ventures enable students to partake in prestigious internships and gain the experience necessary to start a successful career after graduation. This top engineering institute continues to attract Brazilian students through the BSMP program, and RHIT is in fact one of the program’s top fifty BSMP host institutions.
Rowan University
Established in 1923, Rowan University is a medium-sized public research institution based in Glassboro, New Jersey, offering an extensive range of academic programs, research opportunities, and student support services. Numerous clubs, professional societies, and sports teams round out campus life at this academically-challenging school known for its prestigious programs in engineering, business, biology, and medicine. U.S. News & World Report ranks Rowan in the top twenty universities in the northern United States, with chemical engineering and business amongst the most esteemed programs offered.

Located in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, this Roman Catholic, Benedictine institution offers an excellent, peaceful learning environment coupled with convenient accessibility to major employment centers such as nearby Pittsburgh. International students come to SVC for a wide range of programs, including the Integrated Language Studies ESL program.
Abundant skiing, hiking, and other outdoor activities provide an appreciated balance to SVC’s rigorous academics. Students feel well-prepared for future careers, and the school boasts high graduate employment rates. As a comprehensive liberal arts institution, SVC offers programs ranging from pre-law to natural sciences, attracting students with a wide range of interests. Santa Clara University
Strategically located in California’s technological hub of Silicon Valley, Santa Clara University (SCU) is a well-connected, student-centric Jesuit institution with ties to international partner universities, local technology companies, and the Santa Clara community. Established in 1851, SCU is well known both locally and internationally as a leader in teaching, research, and community empowerment. Attracted to the SCU’s globally-oriented mindset and top notch engineering and STEM programs, Brazilians come to SCU via the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program and bilateral agreements. SCU is looking for like-minded, global partners with a commitment to local outreach and a capacity for joint research projects.
SUNY Cobleskill
The State University of New York of College of Agriculture and Technology (SUNY Cobleskill) is a SUNY member campus located in Cobleskill, New York, and ranked by the U.S. News & World Report as the 36th best university in the northern United States. The university’s strengths include technology-focused programs, as well as locally-applicable programs in food science and natural resource management. A traditionally agriculture- and technology-based university, SUNY Cobleskill has partnerships and affiliate relationships with equipment manufacturers like the John Deere Company, Caterpillar, CNH, Doosan/Bobcat, and Kubota, and boasts top-ranked programs in animal and plant science, food systems, energy technology, and pre-veterinary studies. In addition, SUNY Cobleskill students and faculty engage in sustainable fisheries and aquaculture research, in conjunction with the plant sciences department.
Brazilian students are drawn to the agricultural business program, which emphasizes field-based learning. Programs such as this are applicable and attractive to Brazilian national needs, where students see the potential for an improvement in business partnerships for Brazilian farmers and sustainable food waste-reduction initiatives. SUNY Cobleskill hopes to attract student, faculty, and researcher collaborators, and invites Brazilians to study by means of short-term exchange programs or to pursue a degree program.
SUNY Cortland
The State University of New York College at Cortland (SUNY Cortland) is on a mission to collaborate with the world. Multiple initiatives are in the works to increase the school’s international student population, support current foreign students on campus with English classes and advising, and increase the number of exchange partnerships with Brazil and beyond. At present, SUNY Cortland teachers and students connect via Skype with ESL students in Brazil in a mutually beneficial exchange to practice both ESL learning and teaching.
Additionally, a new Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) course has been designed to promote international collaboration in an experiential cross-cultural learning environment in which students from around the world work together without leaving their home countries. Other internationally-based programs at SUNY Cortland include bachelors and masters degrees in International Sport Management, bachelors and masters degrees in Teaching English as a Second Language, and the Bachelors of Arts International Studies. SUNY Cortland students are truly interested in expanding their education beyond the United States, which is why students may choose from over 600 different study abroad programs offered within the entire SUNY system.
Syracuse University
Located in the heart of New York State, Syracuse University is one of the top 65 universities in the United States. This private coeducational university is a favorite choice for high-achieving international students due to its top-ranking programs (including industrial design, entrepreneurship, public affairs, and journalism), breadth of academic options (200 majors), commitment to research and study abroad, and picturesque residential campus. The university is located within walking distance of the city of Syracuse’s many attractions and resources, and within driving distance of New York City, Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia, and many other urban and cultural centers.
