University of Alaska at Fairbanks
The University of Alaska at Fairbanks (UAF) experience is a balance of exciting outdoor adventures and rigorous academics. Students work hard, as UAF offers top-notch programs in engineering, mining, and hard sciences, and are rewarded with endless opportunities to ski, snowboard, mountaineer, ice skate, and more. UAF attracts extensive funding for research, and most students, including the 20 Brazilians in BSMP, opt to participate in some of the many exciting research opportunities available at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students apply for UAF’s prestigious URSA awards which fund a wide variety of creative and research-based projects. Small class sizes and student mentors mean UAF students are able to focus on learning, as well as contribute to meaningful projects throughout the university.
University at Buffalo
As the State University of New York’s largest campus, the University at Buffalo (UB) attracts a diverse student body from more than 110 countries. UB can be described as having “a culture of resilient optimism, resourceful thinking, and pragmatic dreaming,” traits embodied in the school’s many international outreach activities. With an international enrollment of more than 5,500, UB maintains exchange partnerships with more than eighty universities worldwide, and more than one in twelve UB students will study abroad.
UB students work alongside distinguished faculty in groundbreaking research. The university has contributed toward important inventions such as the implantable battery-operated cardiac pacemaker and development of pattern recognition software. A member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), UB is a comprehensive institution, and offers nearly 400 undergraduate and graduate degrees ranging from engineering, to pharmacology, to architecture.
Situated in safe, suburban Amherst, the main UB campus provides a much-appreciated haven for those wishing to focus on their academics, yet offers the convenient option of a relaxing weekend away at Niagara Falls, Lake Erie, or Toronto – all nearby. In the Buffalo-Niagara region, activities such as hiking, skiing, and golfing are readily available, and there are frequent daily flights to New York City, Boston, Washington, Chicago, and Philadelphia, among other cities.
University of California, Berkeley
The University of California (UC), Berkeley has consistently been ranked by the U.S. News & World Report as the best public university in the country. With nearly all of UC Berkeley’s engineering programs ranked in the Top 10 in the U.S., it is no surprise this state-of-the-art institution draws impressive numbers of international students from nearly 100 countries around the world. This diverse campus across the bay from San Francisco maintains over eighty international partnerships, and UC Berkeley students enjoy several study abroad options to Brazil.
UC Berkeley welcomes international students to join its renowned Summer Sessions program, an innovative, six- to eight-week experience in which students are able to take UC Berkeley classes with the school’s exceptional faculty in an affordable, unique summer learning environment. Students may enroll in the Summer English Language Studies program, as well over 600 traditional courses such as biology, psychology, business, and chemistry. Registered UC Berkeley Summer Sessions students have access to the school’s Student Learning Center, which offers free services such as writing support and tutoring.
University of California, Riverside
Located in warm, vivacious Southern California, the University of California at Riverside (UCR) boasts an affordable, high quality of student life in conjunction with rigorous academics. UCR programs include education, engineering, business, medicine, natural sciences, and social sciences, and range from the undergraduate to the graduate and professional levels. Approximately five thousand international students per year study at UCR, drawn to the English language program, the well-rounded UCR experience, and the diverse student body.
UCR has been involved with Brazil for over twenty years, and is currently one of the Top 50 host institutions for the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program in the United States. UCR international students are supported by a large network of staff at the International Student Resource Center, who organize home-stays, housing at the UCR international apartments, and social activities to encourage integration into the UCR community.
University of California, Los Angeles
A highly competitive public research university, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) is one of the nation’s most sought-after institutions for its academic prestige, groundbreaking research activities, excellent location, top-notch athletics, and more.
Located half-way between Hollywood and the Pacific Ocean, UCLA attracts thousands of international students, who comprise nearly a quarter of the university’s student body. In addition to a stellar undergraduate program with more than 125 majors available, UCLA offers highly coveted academic programs at the Master’s, PhD, post-doctoral, and professional school levels (which include top-ranked programs in law, medicine, and business). UCLA currently hosts nearly 100 Brazilian students, many of whom are part of the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program, and are consequently enrolled in programs such as medicine, engineering, mathematics, and computer science. UCLA has a long-standing history with Brazil, and maintains a Department of Spanish and Portuguese and a Center for Brazilian Studies, as well as empowering future leaders with interests in Brazil through the Lemann Foundation. UCLA envisions a continuation and expansion of its intimate partnership with Brazil, and continually pursues initiatives such as faculty exchange, student study abroad programs to Brazil, and Brazilian teacher training programs. Locally, UCLA regularly connects with the Brazilian community of Los Angeles through social networking events and activities to promote city-wide knowledge and appreciation of Brazil.
University of Cincinnati
A top research university, University of Cincinnati (UC) offers a large, urban setting with a practical focus on Cooperative Education – UC’s experiential program where students alternate semesters of taking classes with semesters of paid, relevant work experience throughout their education. As a well-ranked, public university, UC is able to offer students a wide variety of funded research opportunities and hundreds of majors to choose from.
Brazilians find themselves at UC by means of the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program and CAPES programs; UC aims to increase enrollment of both Brazilian and other international students in the future. UC is interested in partnering with like-minded, top research universities and believes collaborative research projects would benefit both Brazil and the University of Cincinnati community.
University of Florida, Gainesville
Students at the University of Florida (UF) are involved. Active both on campus and in the surrounding Gainesville community, UF students participate in more than 750 student organizations, study abroad through 100 exchange programs, and compete in Division I athletics.
UF’s large size means that anything is possible, and the school offers over 100 undergraduate degrees and 200 graduate degrees, while students unsatisfied with these options may even choose to design their own major. One of the Top 50 universities in America, UF is a leading institution in the STEM fields, and maintains high national rankings in architecture, business, education, law, nursing, medicine, and veterinary medicine.
Brazil is Florida’s largest trading partner, and consequently draws many Brazilian students to its universities. At UF, students can take Portuguese classes in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies, listen to live Brazilian music through the Center for World Arts, and spend a summer abroad in Rio de Janeiro. Drawn to UF’s excellent STEM programs, Brazilians, who are present in nearly every UF engineering department, often find themselves at the forefront of research activities at UF’s Engineering Innovation Institute and other renowned on-campus research centers.
University of Idaho
The University of Idaho (UI) is one of the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program’s top 25 host institutions, and with good reason. The university believes that Brazilian students can greatly benefit from specialized programs that are relevant and applicable to Brazil, such as environmental science. The rugged natural landscape surrounding Moscow, Idaho, is a playground for outdoors-loving students and a living laboratory for those studying the natural sciences. Intensive English classes are available to UI’s 750 international students, who also partake in group activities such as rafting and hiking excursions throughout Idaho.
The University of Idaho caters to every academic interest and offers over 300 programs, ranging from architecture to engineering to law. Students feel safe and well-adjusted to life in Moscow, and many choose to live in student residence communities, fraternities, sororities, and housing cooperatives. Students are incredibly satisfied with their experiences at UI, and the school’s Department of Student Involvement ensures that all students have access to social, cultural, leadership, and employment opportunities.
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
With an international reputation for excellence, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is home to nearly 10,000 international students and a faculty composed of numerous Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, and Fulbright Award winners. Students enjoy state-of-the-art facilities, including the country’s second largest library, and regularly participate in UIUC’s myriad on-campus clubs, organizations, and athletic teams.
UIUC recognizes a potential for mutually beneficial collaboration in Brazil’s growing economy, and is considering opening a local office in Brazil to further facilitate exchange. Potential areas of joint interest include engineering, agriculture, environmental science, and business. UIUC is a comprehensive institution with over 150 academic programs at all levels, ranging from undergraduate to executive education. The Lemann Institute for Brazilian Studies promotes and funds study and research about Brazil in areas such as agribusiness and energy at UIUC. Participants include undergraduates, law students, faculty, masters, and doctoral students, and the institute brings together people across the UIUC community to foster a cultural and academic understanding and appreciation of Brazil.
University of Kansas
Located on a scenic campus in the Midwestern United States, the University of Kansas (KU) is a major research and teaching institution comprising 28,000 students from every state in the U.S. and 101 countries from every region of the world. Undergraduates enjoy the choice of 190 majors and opportunities to enrich the classroom experience with undergraduate research, service learning, and leadership opportunities. The University of Kansas is well known for its programs in engineering, business, health professions, pharmacy, journalism, fine arts, and liberal arts and sciences. Brazilian students are particularly attracted to the wide array of options within the School of Engineering.
KU is consistently recognized as a top university by U.S. News & World Report, the Princeton Review, and other publications, but the university also has the distinction of being one of only 62 member institutions in the prestigious Association of American Universities, an invite-only association of North America’s leaders in education and research.
KU continues to welcome and support students in the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program. Current international students are able to ease into KU life with the aid of a welcoming orientation and a strong English language program.
University of Kentucky
The University of Kentucky (UK) has something for everyone. With strong medical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, and business programs, UK offers a large research university experience with a full array of opportunities both on and off of campus. UK is already working with schools across Brazil, such as the Federal University of Lavras and the Federal University of Viçosa, enabling both Brazilian and American students to benefit from cross-cultural programs in unique fields such as animal science and plant pathology. UK values the added cultural richness that BSMP students bring to campus, and believes Brazilian students will benefit from UK programs such as mining, forestry, and engineering, that directly apply to issues in Brazil. By investing in human capital, UK is preparing a generation of problem-solvers capable of dealing with international issues that affect the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies – including the United States and Brazil.
University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth
With seven different colleges offering more than 80 undergraduate fields of study, 26 masters and 10 doctoral programs, and generating $22.7 million in annual research activity, it is clear why more than 9,000 students from around the world pick the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMassD) as their institution of choice. With an expansive main campus conveniently located near Boston, Providence, New Bedford, and Fall River, the majority of students live on campus in an array of housing options including traditional residence halls, suites, and apartments. Students thrive at UMassD, where highly regarded faculty are in the classroom teaching as well as pursuing research.
UMassD faculty work closely with undergraduate and graduate students to conduct research that matters. The state of Massachusetts recently awarded the school $450,000 for fisheries research that will be used to design better habitat management plans for the economically important local fisheries industry. International students appreciate the ability to conduct applied research at UMassD programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. University of Minnesota Crookston
At the University of Minnesota Crookston, academic rigor is met with the welcoming environment of a safe, small-town Midwestern community. This “small campus, big degree” institution is ranked by the U.S. News & World Report as the best public university in the Midwest. The area’s wide open spaces give students access to natural history areas, agricultural research centers, a health education center, and other impressive state-of-the-art facilities. The University of Minnesota Crookston boasts highly-ranked programs in veterinary medicine and horticulture, as well as in business, environmental science, software engineering, and equine science.

University of Mississippi
Some of America’s most influential writers, such as William Faulkner, have called the University of Mississippi their home. These days, the University of Mississippi offers: 200 undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD programs; top-level sports teams; and more than seventy exchange programs with institutions throughout the world. Qualified students are offered generous scholarships to come to this beautiful, warm, safe university town and experience life in the American South amongst some of the nation’s top researchers and faculty. Thirty-one Brazil Scientific Mobility Program students can be found on campus, studying intensive English, Southern culture, business, and more. The University of Mississippi looks forward to welcoming next year’s BSMP cohort and expanding the Mississippi-Brazil partnership to collaborate on international research projects.
University of Montana
University of Montana's (UM) scenic campus is located in the heart of the city of Missoula. At UM, students can choose from more than 120 programs including pharmacology, forestry, and bio-medicine, in addition to on-campus intensive English classes at the English Language Institute. The university considers its internship program an integral part of the curriculum, with many students staying on campus to work in research labs or conduct field studies. Living stipends are provided to all Brazil Scientific Mobility Program students who are studying English, taking courses in their respective disciplines, or participating in internships. Student organizations and support services are abundant at UM, including the International Student Club, which was founded in 1924; the Global Partner Program, which assigns a buddy to international students; and a Brazilian students association. UM has established partnerships with over ninety universities in more than forty countries, and with many other organizations around the world.
University of Oregon
In addition to stellar academic programs and a diverse student body, the University of Oregon boasts a safe, affordable, and scenic location less than a two hours’ drive from the thriving city of Portland. The U of O is a community, not just an institution. Students at the U of O are open-minded, collaborative, and welcoming. Incoming international students are awarded substantial scholarships and encouraged to integrate into campus life with the support of resources such as the American English Institute.
A Category One research institute, the U of O provides a rigorous academic setting for top-tier students, researchers, and faculty from around the world. University of South Carolina
Best known for its renowned international business program, a highly prestigious honors college, and an incredibly wide range of academic programs, the University of South Carolina (USC) is proud to welcome students from around the world to study at this top research institution located in the state’s capital city, Columbia. International students are offered English language classes, support with the immigration process, international student dormitories, and a variety of group excursions to ensure a smooth transition into USC student life. University of Southern California
The University of Southern California is one of California’s premier institutions, attracting students from over 100 countries who come to study in sunny Los Angeles amongst some of the nation’s most renowned academics. USC is comprehensive and offers excellent programs in engineering, film, medicine, business, education, law, and more.
The intensive English language program, undergraduate preparation program, master’s preparation and conditional admission, and plethora of student groups and athletic programs are some of the many reasons why approximately 200 Brazilians have chosen to study at USC at all academic levels. Brazil-USC partnerships currently include the CAPES scholarship for PhD students and a resident USC office in Brazil, which is part of a network of eight international offices around the globe. USC partners with eight Brazilian universities, and has recently launched an internship program to enable USC students to experience and learn from Brazil.
University of the District of Columbia
The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) is not your average American university. First of all, UDC offers the unique benefit of being located in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. It offers an incredible array of academic programs, research, internships, and other experiential learning opportunities. UDC is a historically black college, with 8.5% of its enrollment made up of international students. UDC caters to non-traditional, part-time students, and strives to provide an affordable and accessible college education, especially for those who have faced previous academic and personal challenges and may be the first in their families to attend college. A diverse, open-minded student body can be found working together on real-world issues at the heart of the capital city. UDC hopes to develop academic, outreach, and research partnerships with Brazil in order to solve common urban problems in areas such as business, engineering, law, literacy, urban agriculture, water quality, global hunger, and sustainability.
University of Toledo
The University of Toledo (UT) is proud to offer one of Ohio’s strongest English language programs for international students, where, with the aid of an iPad, students with little to no English skills find themselves ready to dive into American university life in no time at all. UT’s 2,000 foreign students are attracted to unique programs such the medical program which incorporates global health mission trips and international hands-on training relevant to Brazil’s own health issues. Other specialized programs include the engineering program in photovoltaics, where students undertake cutting-edge research on solar panels. University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire
Founded in 1916, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire continues to build its national reputation based on the achievements of its students and faculty. As one of the Midwest’s top public universities, UW-Eau Claire provides students with small classes led by talented professors, cutting-edge programs, endless opportunities to get involved and experience more of the world, and the support they need to meet their goals for success. According to UWEC’s Career Services Survey, over 95% of its graduates are either employed or have gone on to graduate schools.
UW-Eau Claire welcomes international students whether they seek intensive English study, a semester/year long experience, or to earn a degree. University of Wisconsin Oshkosh
Oshkosh, Wisconsin is a thriving economic hub with a plethora of opportunities available to students of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (UWO). Home to major companies including Oshkosh Corp, Miles Kimball, and US Bank, UWO students face fewer challenges finding internships, especially with the help of the school’s very active career services department. In addition to free tutoring, pre-program Intensive English classes are available to all students to help them succeed in UWO’s rigorous STEM programs such as computer science, physics, and engineering technology. UWO is a hidden gem in the Midwest, offering a safe environment and total immersion into American university life.
University of Wyoming
Students are drawn to the University of Wyoming’s (U of W) superior combination of academic excellence, quality of life, and affordable value. As the only four-year public institution in Wyoming, the U of W offers extensive resources and opportunities, and hosts approximately 800 students from ninety countries around the world. Students in the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program have been very active on campus, and have maintained lasting relationships with their peers at the U of W. The school offers strong STEM programs, including petroleum engineering, and will be establishing a new English language program in January of 2015. Engineering faculty members partake in applied research with international collaborators, and one professor is currently working on developing earthquake-proof concrete for construction use in natural disaster-prone countries.
Dr. Anne Alexander, Director of International Programs at the U of W, described the school’s attractive quality of life: “The University of Wyoming is in a beautiful area in terms of outdoor resources, with 300 days of sunshine, and Laramie is small town that enables students to focus on their studies, yet is only a 2.5 hour drive from Denver. There is safety on campus, as well as some of the best bouldering and rock climbing sites.”
